80 CONSERVATION ACTIONS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO HELP ORANGUTANS

Schools

  1. Bring in food that orangutans eat and have a feast together
  2. Carnivals
  3. Classrooms
  4. Clubs
  5. Consider the impact of your daily choices and purchases
  6. Holiday Celebrations
  7. Invite an Orangutan Speaker to your School or classroom
  8. Make enrichment hammocks or toys for orangutans; show others how they are used by orangutans and then donate them to OURF for rescued orangutans
  9. Sponsor an orangutan-themed contest – photography, art, essay, physical fitness, music
  10. Sports
  11. Take or give a class on orangutan facts and challenges; prepare a fact sheet and share with other students and parents; check the OURF website for lots of information!
  12. Watch a video about orangutans, then have a discussion, write a report
  13. Write a report about orangutans

Home/Community

  1. Avoid buying products made with unsustainable palm oil.
  2. Buy Art and other handmade items from local Artisans who make orangutan-themed items
  3. Buy products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) with FSC labels
  4. Community Action Clubs
  5. Convert your items to cash on eBay Giving Works’ and designate anywhere from 10%-100% to OURF
  6. Drive your car less; Carpool with friends/family

  3. Raise funds for Veterinarian supplies

  1. Sent an e-gift donation to the orangutans in honor of someone’s birthday, anniversary, or other special day. E-gift enough to feed a rescued orangutan for 6 months – fund a forest security patrol for a month – purchase vet supplies for a care facility!
  2. Share your passion and concerns about orangutans with family, friends and others in the community. Invite them to join you in your conservation efforts.
  3. Shop using AmazonSmile so a percentage of your purchase goes to OURF
  4. Sign a petition that draws attention to activities that are harmful to orangutans and the habitat in which they live.
  5. Sports
  6. Take public transportation where possible
  7. Talk about it! Talk to family, friends, classmates, co-workers, organized events or meetings to explain how everyone can do their part and why orangutans and their habitat are important and significant to the world’s ecology.

Campaigns

  5. Donate cryptocurrency – which is classified as property by the IRS, is tax-deductible and is not subject to capital gains tax. See “The Giving Block” website where OURF is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to find out how easy it is to donate
  6. Donate T-shirt printing, Advertising to OURF for marketing and merchandising outreach
  7. Fill out a donor pledge card to an orangutan organization so they can better plan for the financial year knowing contributions are coming in regularly.
  8. Fundraising
  9. Honor a friend or a loved one with a Memorial gift that can act on his or her beliefs.
  10. List OURF in your Will or Estate Plan
  11. List OURF as the beneficiary of your Life insurance, IRAs or pension plans for a possible tax advantage of a giving a larger gift than you might otherwise be able to do
  12. Participate in Corporate giving
  13. Review your Trust to determine if there are certain trust actions that can be taken to reduce your taxes now or in the future, while supporting OURF
  14. Support OURF and other organizations that are working to protect orangutans and their habitats
  15. Sponsor/Adopt a program
  16. Sponsor a scholarship for students studying to help orangutans
  17. Start a matching gift program at your Business
  18. Take advantage of employer matching funds, automatically increasing the charitable donation made to OURF
  19. Targeted Giving
  20. Transfer stock that has appreciated in value to receive a tax deduction and offset capital gains taxes
  21. Write a letter to your Congressperson asking them to sponsor legislation in support of orangutans
